Come see us off during your lunch hour on Tuesday. Not only will you get a free concert, you’ll also get free Domino’s pizza courtesy of @Ramon_DeLeon!

If you’d like to throw in the price of a slice, we’ll have a tip jar. Any donations will help us get from here to there and will go towards St. Jude’s.

We’d LOVE to see you there! To RSVP, click on the FB link/invite below or shoot D Kav an email at: info@davidkav.com

News is official (cat is out of the bag....) I'm GOING ON TOUR! - October 21, 2009

Hey everyone!

So, remember that news that I kept under wraps? Well, it's official:

I'M GOING ON TOUR IN DECEMBER! WOOHOO!

First of many tours called "Writing The Rails!" The following is directly from the official website: www.writingtherailstour.com (please visit the site, spread the word, and help in ANY way that you can!)

Peace, love, music, laughter and life,
D Kav

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The first time that David Kav sat down with Leah Jones, founder of Natiiv Arts & Media, the idea for a tour bubbled up. Instead of throwing his guitar in the back of a rental car, he would put it on his back, grab a duffle bag and climb aboard an Amtrak train.

David would perform in towns where the train had stations. Stopping to perform at colleges, cafes or bars. Then hop on the next train out of town, share a few tunes in the dining car and perform again a few towns down the road.

The idea was shelved, but only for a couple months and then Writing the Rails was born first over tea and finalized at an impromptu brainstorm with Melissa Pierce, the producer of Life in Perpetual Beta, and Theresa Carter, the founder of The Local Tourist.

Writing the Rails: Memphis

For the first Writing the Rails, David will be traveling from Chicago to Memphis and performing in Champaign-Urbana, Charleston and Carbondale along the way. His goal is to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and write new songs for his next album. When he gets to Memphis, he’ll perform along the route of the St. Jude Rock N Roll Marathon and (we hope) record a few songs at Sun Studios.

We’re still busy solidifying the shows, but the schedule is:

•December 1 - Champaign-Urbana, IL
•December 2 - Charleston, IL
•December 3 - Carbondale, IL
•December 4 & 5 - Memphis, TN
How can you help?

•We need to solidify gigs in each town. Do you have a favorite bar, cafe or university location? Shoot us an email at info@davidkav.com with info to book the shows.
•Make a donation to Writing the Rails. Some of the funds will be used to pay for operating costs (like the train tickets) but anything above and beyond will be donated to St. Jude’s.
•Spread the word that these shows are coming to town on the Amtrak train and help fill the venues.
•Become an official sponsor of Writing the Rails: Memphis
Who is already on board?

Gig @ Aurelio's Pizza in Addison, IL 9/30 is cancelled - September 28, 2009

Hello, everyone!

Hoping you are well and that life is prosperous for you in all regards. It seems that there are some major changes for, well, everyone these days. Might have something to do with the numerous times that Mercury has retrograded (you laugh if you want to. Some of you may believe in that, some may not. Regardless, you can't deny the major shift in the air. It's almost like, "Mercury, make up your damn mind (proverbially speaking.))

In looking at this website, had no idea that I waited so long to update it. Sorry about that.

The immediate thing to report: The gig that was scheduled at Aurelio's Pizza in Addison, IL on Wed. Sept. 30th has just been cancelled due to low response, weather and budget issues. There will be one at the aforementioned location in the future. We'll keep you posted.

So, big news/works being stirred up. I can't get into details just yet. However, I can tell you this, to quote what Maynard James Keenan said in regards to Puscifer before their last release (or rather, to loosely paraphrase what he said,) "it's like saying, in a good way, 'I know something you don't know. I know something you don't know...'"

In short, stay tuned, and thank you (as always) for your love and support in my music! Until next time,

Peace, love, music, laughter and life,
D Kav

Chicago Rock 'N Roll Half-Marathon/American Cancer Society fundraiser, shows, and TLC's Mt. Kilamanjaro climb/fundraiser - June 1, 2009

Hello, you beautiful soul!

Can you believe that it's June already?!? I have the NERVE to act surprised! ;)

A LOT is going on at this time (which can be a good thing!)

As you may have read in my last post, I have reached my fundraising goal for "We Walk. Laura Twirls" via The Overnight walk happening June 27 into the morning hours of June 28. (More info at www.lauratwirls.com)

As of right now (thanks to your generosity and support,) I have raised $1,070!!! Thank you thank you thank you! I thank you; The Maceika family thanks you, and her friends/teammates thank you. There are still teammates who need help in reaching their goal. Please give what you can:

www.theovernight.org/team/lauratwirls. Thank you!

So now, onto the next charity...

I'll also be participating in the Chicago Rock 'N Roll Half-Marathon on Sunday, August 2nd. I need to raise $750.00 for the American Cancer Society before the aforementioned date for the RNR Half-Marathon. Whatever you can spare is greatly appreciated:

http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?px=11682197&pg=personal&fr_id=18802
I bring this up now because, in the same fashion that I was raising funds for The Overnight, ALL tips/CD sales at upcoming gigs will go to the American Cancer Society until I reached my goal there. So, thank you! :D

ALSO, my friend, Theresa Carter (i.e. "The Local Tourist:" www.thelocaltourist.com) needs to raise $20,000 for Endure To Cure BEFORE she climbs Mt. Kilamanjaro in August. As of right now, she's only raised $1,055! If you can, please help her out:

http://www.enduretocure.org/athlete/view.aspx?id=E2C00007
I personally believe, even more so now with the economic crunch/crisis, that we need to dig down a bit deeper for those in dire need. With that being said, ANY contribution (be it $1, $5, $10...ANY amount) is a huge help. Truly - I thank you. And, as always, thank you ever so much for supporting local Chicago music!

Peace, love, music, laughter and life,
D Kav

Hello, you! It is SO nice to see you again! ;D

Can you believe it?!? Spring?!? Woo-hoo! Here's hoping the WARMER weather sticks, no? Here's hoping.

First of all, the Back Room Sessions at Uncommon Ground on Clark was a MONSTER success...artistically and audience-capacity-wise. It grew as it went along. I HAVE to thank my guests for making the month of March 2009 an INCREDIBLE month for me:

It was a privilege and an Honor to be the curator...and...I (along with KAVUS) shall be returning to Back Room Sessions when Jeff Brown curates in May. More to come... Stay tuned.

But, for now, KAVUS was born back in 2006. It took a nose-dive quite fast (i.e. it went "bye-bye.") BUT, after a 3-year hiatus...or something like that, KAVUS resurges and is playing around town (was last seen at Seamus McGhee's and at Uncommon Ground for the aforementioned Back Room Sessions.)
KAVUS will be playing again Sat. Apr. 11, 2009 at

"Back Room Session" at Uncommon Ground - 3800 N. Clark every Wednesday in March! - March 2, 2009

Hello, you lifeline of local music (wherever you may be!...But especially in Chicago...no offense. ;D)

So, if you have seen my most recent video post (on either YouTube and/or my Facebook page:

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/pages/David-Kav/10036504542?ref=ts
You'll have heard (or will hear) me talk about the wonderful privilege that I have been offered to curate the "Back Room Sessions" at Uncommon Ground (Wrigleyville) for the month of March! MANY thanks to all of the awesome singer/songwriters AND bands who have agreed to join me for the forthcoming weeks!

Per the suggestions of Mr. Joe Jencks, a local and touring singer/songwriter, I have decided to make these Back Room Sessions "in-the-round." In other words, each artist will be rotating every 3 or 4 songs in order to keep the momentum, the energy, the feel of community and the crowd going throughout the evening! (And since every guest artist has unanimously agreed that this idea is cool, this is guaranteed to be a blast!)

The line-up for "Back Room Sessions" for March is as follows:

MARCH 4th:
SHELDON HARRIS
TIMSHEL (www.myspace.com/aleximas)

MARCH 11th:
MEL WASHINGTON (www.remedyband.com)
DYLAN LLOYD PROJECT
(www.myspace.com/pianodyl)

MARCH 18th:
JEFF BROWN

EMILY IVARI

MARCH 25th:
HOLIDAY HOUSE
www.myspace.com/holidayhouse3 ROOT CAUSE

There may be other special guests to arrive throughout the series. So, stay tuned for more news as it develops. No joke. This is bound to be more fun than...oh, I don't know. I can't even think of a proper analogy, ok? :O

See you at the show!

Peace, love and music,
D Kav

Not only will I have the lovely Ms. Kat Fitzgerald joining me on percussion for the entire set (MANY, many thanks, Kat;) I also have the privilege and honor of having TWO CONFIRMED guests with me for my set that evening:

Mr. Jeff Brown (guitarist, vox for GOODBYEHOME) will be joining me for a song (or two, perhaps) along with the beautiful and talented Ms. Emily Ivari. (www.myspace.com/emilyivari)
Emily and I will be doing two songs - one original song from each artist respectively. Which songs, you ask? Hmmm...you'll have to see... :D

Happy New Year! An appearance at UG Open Mic Finals and on "Inner Rhythms" on CANTV! - January 9, 2009

Hello and Happy New Year, you! :D

Here's hoping that your holiday season was merry and bright! I hope that you truly got everything that you wanted - whatever it is that you may have celebrated! :)

So, it's already Jan. 9th...and I've already competed at the Uncommon Ground Open Mic Finals AND I'll be appearing on "Inner Rhythms" on CANTV (Chicago/Channel 19) TODAY at 3 pm. IF you can't see the show live or if you don't have a DVR/Tivo (or if you're not in Chicago, I should be getting a copy on DVD. Hit me up if you'd like to secure a copy. Also going to see if I can put it up on YouTube. Stay tuned.). :)

In speaking of videos, it is one of my many New Year's Resolutions to actually post videos of my music, and anything else related to my career on FB, YouTube, etc. So, something else to look for.

There are other ideas a-brewing. But, not ready for fermentation just yet. I'll keep you posted. However,

Another show:

SEAMUS McGHEE'S BAR & GRILL
308 CANAL ST.
LEMONT, IL. 60534
NO COVER ($5 suggested donation)

Gig swap for Sat. Dec. 27th (no - Seamus McGhee's, yes - Via Gelato Cafe) - December 23, 2008

Hello, you beautiful people (seriously!) ;D

Sorry to bother you or if this is last-minute...but I've been meaning to let you all know that the gig for Sat. Dec. 27th at Seamus McGhee's in Lemont has been cancelled! I apologize to those who are disappointed in this (I've already heard some complaints. Trust me - I was looking forward to it as well.) It has been rescheduled for Sat. Jan. 24th from 9 pm to 1 am (308 Canal Street, Lemont, IL. 60435) However...

I did get another gig in place of that one (sort of. Well, it's WAAY North as opposed to SouthWest of Chicago...and ... it's a much earlier gig...which may be appealing to those who can't be out late:)

SAT. DEC. 27th:
VIA GELATO CAFE
1853 TOWER DRIVE
GLENVIEW, IL. 60026
Show: 7 pm to 9 pm
NO COVER!

Yep, got a lead about a new venue that is trying to bring in the "live music" crowd into their establishment. (Thanks to Daved Beck for the referral!) So, if you live around Glenview and/or you don't mind the huge trek up North, come on by! It'd be great to see you! :)

Whatever you are celebrating this Holiday Season (Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, "Chinese-and-a-movie Day" ... stolen from Diana Lawrence, Boxing Day, Decemberween...what have you...) be safe and have a beautiful celebration!

Peace, love, prosperity, and music,
David Kav

Time and time again (music, life and the Holiday season.) - December 15, 2008

Well, just got back home from work. I was going to go to Guitar Center to figure out what I want to purchase next - a 5-string bass for a project that will hopefully take off for Chicago Dance Crash in 2010, a portable recording device for song ideas/shows, harmonicas, and/or...all? Dunno. However, after standing outside for a few minutes waiting for a train (and realzing that I didn't have a gig bag for said bass IF I purchased it today) and knowing that I had an acoustic guitar on my back, I thought the wisest thing to do would be to go home to, at least, drop off the acoustic. I KNEW that it would be tempting to just stay inside. But, I MAY have the courage to go back out there in a bit. We shall see.

Regardless, I did state that I was going back to Uncommon Ground on Devon again this evening to see a fellow friend and musician, Jeff Brown, play this evening. I do believe that Jen Porter may be playing at the Underground Wonder Bar for a LATE LATE set tonight as well. Still have YET to get her a copy of my latest CD (makes sense...considering that she's on half of the damn thing! :O :D) Found out last night at UG Devon that one of the servers (Whitney, I believe? Dunno) is playing the first set at tonight's UG Devon show. So, small world. I am excited (despite the bitter cold.) Speaking of UG Devon,

I had the utmost privilege to play with Kat Fitzgerald who joined me, once again, on percussion. She just posted a note about last night's show. Therefore, I felt compelled to do the same. The show was a lot of fun and, yes, energetic. The latter was good considering that I had just arisen from a LOOONG nap at home beforehand. See, the thing is, I've been feeling perpetually tired lately (despite Kat's note of "endless energy.") From what I can gather (to paraphrase/steal from Kiefer Sutherland re: tapings of "24,") the one thing that I have learned in the past year or so is...how to conserve energy. I know, I know. You may be reading this stating, "conserve energy? HA!" And, sometimes (if not, most of the time, I'll agree with you.) However, it's the other moments that I have to refute the accusation. Seriously.

I LOVE my life and I LOVE the fact that music fuels my living: artistically, FINANCIALLY (not everyone can say that,) and spiritually. However, even though one may solely be performing, I have to state that it can drain you. I don't mean that in a negative way. However, one must replenish if one is constantly "on the go." So, even at moments where I may have gotten "a full night's sleep" (which I have never really wrapped my brain, body and soul around said concept,) I still feel lethargic. Well, the bottom line is, I have to give myself credit and state that: I ... AM ... BUSY. Which, in this season, state, time and in this economy...is a GREAT thing. And I feel and am truly grateful, thankful and blessed for that (need to state that to the Universe.)

So, when I have moments like I had on stage last night with Kat at UG Devon, it is truly anl experience when you can lose yourself and replenish yourself artistically, mentally and spiritually in the music. As Kat stated to me last night, "it took me a while to get into it." Same here. Started off VERY low-key. But, at one point (and this has happened the last 2 or 3 times that Kat and I have played together,) I completely lost track of where I was at and just "got into it." So, if that's my "caffeine in my veins" (amongst the ENORMOUS amounts of caffeine and minimal amounts...yes, MINIMAL amounts, of nicotine,) so be it. I would and want to keep this great profession, art form and gift. Yet, I give it away EVERY time I perform. THAT'S how I know that it's ok to have and to keep my music. The old adage: "You have to give it away to keep it."

So, time and time again, amidst all of my whinings and my poutings (whether it be the Holiday season or not,) I have to take a step back, look at the big picture and realize, "I am one of the luckiest sons-of-bitches on Earth. Truly, I am." And, as you read this note, I HAVE to count you in as one of the key elements that make my life as wonderful as it is. Without my friends, colleagues, family, fans, ALL people, I wouldn't have the inspiration or the job that I have. For that, I thank you!

WHATEVER you may be celebrating, here's wishing you and yours a beautiful and wonderful Holiday season. As Diana Lawrence said last night in the "best Xmas song...ever."

Happy "Chinese-and-a-movie" Day! Diana, I LOVE that song. It's been going through my head ALL day :D BTW, www.myspace.com/dianalawrence.

Peace, love and music,
David Kav

A LOT to talk about...new videos, new shows, cancelled show, Juliana Hatfield (and a partridge in a pear tree.) - October 26, 2008

Hey there!

It's been a while since I've left a post here. So, I thought...since I have a LOT to write about, now's a better time than ever. :)

So, on top of the fundraiser for Cindy Brandle Dance Co. that I am performing at this Sat. Nov. 1st with Gathering Moss and Cindy Brandle (more at www.cindybrandledance.com,) I am also playing at the Chicago Dance Crash's Black & White & Red Ball at The Spot on Sunday, November 9th. BOTH are great causes to raise money for these dance companies respectively. Please check out more re: CDC's fundraiser at www.chicagodancecrash.com.

There are also new videos up on YouTube courtesy of David and DiscoBoy Productions. These are from a show that I played when I opened up for Daniel Spratt at Rockwell Lounge back in May 2008. The one that I will try to post here is of an original song, "The Joke's On You." This is currently NOT available on any of my albums. However, I am considering it for a future recording.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuXOCL70YJU
I have yet to tell Greg this at The Fixx Coffee Bar (so, if you're reading this, sorry, Greg.) However, due to a lack of time for preparation and publicity, I am cancelling the CD RELEASE PARTY (TAKE TWO) show at The Fixx. Was hoping to get a HUGE PUSH for a band AND an audience for another CD Release party. Therefore, I will re-schedule this show at a later time. Please stay tuned.

Just recently, I spent a week in NYC for CMJ '08 - the annual Music and Film Fest. I won two all access badges courtesy of www.ourstage.com (thanks to Jason Black..and a BIGGER thanks to www.justplainfolks.com. Without you guys, I would've not discovered the former web site. So, thank you to both web sites!) Had a GREAT TIME! Already homesick for "the city that never sleeps" (even though it is good to be back home in the Windy City. ;D) Along with seeing Manhattan, Times Square, NBC Universal (courtesy of Durrell...many thanks to you,) I saw a concert on Thursday that made my entire week an awesome one.

Upon signing up for CMJ '08's badge contest (which I totally didn't expect to win,) I knew that Juliana Hatfield would be performing this past week. Once I saw this, I was totally psyched. Truth be told, I haven't been on track with her extensive solo career over the past 10 years. I remember the radio hits, "My Sister" and "Spin The Bottle." BUT, I was totally floored with her intimate acoustic performance and her readings from her new autobiography "When I Grow Up." My God! The simplicity, the beauty, and the passion from both her book excerpts and from her music were undeniable. I HAD to buy copies of both her book and her latest CD "How To Walk Away." Waited in line for her to autograph both the aforementioned items.

Guys, I've only been starstruck by TWO people in my entire life (and both were women. There - I've said it.) The first woman was Julia Cameron whom I met when her book "floor sample" was released. I was stammering when I approached her in line. It was no different with Ms. Hatfield. The difference between the two? Ms. Hatfield looked at me and said, "hello again." She remembered me from a panel that was held a day before called "How, Where and Why I Wrote That Song." (I think that was what it was called. Not quite sure.) THAT was completely surprising. I'm definitely seeing her upcoming show in Chicago which (rumour has it) will be held on Dec. 2nd at Double Door!

The BEST songs on her current album are "The Fact Remains," "Shining On," and the ever sexy "Just Lust." The book is also unabashedly honest, depressing, and hooking. I am loving the fact that I can read certain parts of it and say (even in the infancy of my career,) "yes, I can TOTALLY relate."

So, Juliana, if you happen to be reading this, I KNOW what you mean when you say (to paraphrase....'cause I haven't gotten to that part of the book yet...only remember what you read to us during your performance) that "if someone is kissing my ass, there must be something really wrong with this world." It is not my intention to embarrass you. Not in the slightest. It is my intention, however, to state when a performer truly moves me with their honesty, their intelligence and their passion. So, many, many thanks for a great show, a great book and for your great music. Thank you for "keeping it real," per se.

Ok. Quite enough for one reading. As always, thank you for your love and support in my music. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Without you, I don't have a job. I love my life, and I am truly grateful.

Peace, love and music,
David Kav
